Password Generator

Choose a length and character types, then generate a random password. It never leaves your device.

About this tool.

Weak, reused passwords are the most common way accounts get taken over. This generator uses the Web Crypto API, the same source of randomness browsers use for encryption, rather than Math.random, which is predictable and unsuitable for secrets.

Length matters more than complexity. Each extra character multiplies the number of guesses an attacker needs. The strength line estimates entropy in bits from your length and character set. Pair generated passwords with a password manager so you never have to remember them.

Three steps, then you are done.

  1. Set the length

Use the slider. 16 characters or more is a good default.

  2. Pick character types

Include letters, numbers and symbols unless a site forbids them.

  3. Copy and save

Copy the password into your password manager. It is not stored here.

Questions about this tool.

Is the password stored or sent anywhere?

No. It is generated in your browser and disappears when you close the tab.

How long should a password be?

At least 14 to 16 characters for important accounts.

Why not use Math.random?

It is not cryptographically secure. This tool uses crypto.getRandomValues instead.
